On October 23, 2026, Volcano Engine, the cloud division of ByteDance (the company behind TikTok), announced Seedance 2.5 4K, a 4K version of its AI video generation model Seedance 2.5. The model is aimed at film and television production, and the company calls it the most capable in the Seedance 2.5 generation. For now it is limited to trials with select businesses, and the general public cannot use it yet. The news was reported by Chinese outlets including IT Home and NetEase.
What is Seedance 2.5 4K?
Seedance 2.5 4K makes Seedance 2.5, which generates video from text, images and other inputs, available at high 4K resolution. The company says it was trained with particular emphasis on human facial expressions, fine motion and on-screen detail.
According to IT Home, its main features are as follows.
- 4K footage that renders texture, outlines and fine detail more clearly
- 10-bit color depth that captures finer gradations of color for smoother transitions
- The ability to show subtle reactions in characters, making it easier to convey emotion beyond dialogue
- Better preservation of the image quality and colors of uploaded reference material, with small text on posters and product packaging easier to read
A "Draft" mode for testing at 480p
A new "Draft" (样片) mode lets users first generate a rough version at a low 480p resolution to check shot composition, performances and camera movement. Once they are satisfied, they can regenerate the same content in 4K for the final version.
High-resolution video takes time and money to generate. The idea is to iterate as often as needed at 480p, which costs less, and switch to 4K only at the end, so creators can refine their work while keeping costs down.
Availability
For now it is limited to trials with select businesses, and the company says it may gradually widen access in the future. Pricing has not been disclosed.
NetEase reported on October 22, the day before the announcement, that the first trials had begun. Access is granted on a per-project basis and limited to 20 studios and directors worldwide. Twenty productions are already using the 4K version, and the earliest is scheduled to air as early as next month in a major production on a Chinese satellite TV channel. The productions reportedly include a film based on a major global IP (the rights to a popular franchise). According to IT Home, some video production and post-production (editing and finishing after filming) companies in China and abroad are also testing it.
The announcement did not say whether it will be available in Japan or offered through ByteDance's international services.
The story of Seedance 2.5 so far
ByteDance first unveiled Seedance 2.5 at its FORCE event on June 23. It opened the API to large enterprises on July 13 and to general developers on July 16, and the model became available on July 31 in Jimeng, its China-focused video app (the official Seed blog treats this date as the official launch). Commercial API use officially opened on August 7.
According to the official blog of Seed, ByteDance's research team, Seedance 2.5 can generate videos with audio up to 30 seconds long in a single pass, and they can be extended repeatedly. Users can provide up to 30 images, 10 videos and 10 audio clips at once as reference material, and can edit just part of a video by specifying a time range. The new 4K version can be seen as raising the finished image quality of this generation to film and TV standards.
How it compares with rivals
In AI video generation, competition over length and image quality continues. Kling AI from China's Kuaishou released Kling 4.0 on October 15, supporting generation of up to 30 seconds. However, its official page also describes 4K output as "coming soon," so the status of 4K support is unclear (our article on Kling 4.0).
Seedance 2.5 4K is not a service anyone can use; instead, ByteDance is partnering with film and TV production companies to test it on real productions. This suggests the company wants to settle how it will be used in professional settings before releasing it widely.
CoAI's take
Putting AI-generated footage on cinema and TV screens requires not just resolution but also fine color detail and natural facial expressions. Seedance 2.5 4K puts features that match real production workflows front and center, such as 10-bit color and a process that separates drafts from final renders.
On the other hand, what we know so far comes from Volcano Engine's own description and reports in Chinese media, and no independent evaluations or pricing have appeared yet. Since the general public cannot use it for now, the practical approach when choosing an AI video tool is to test the already released Seedance 2.5 or other services to see whether they deliver the length and quality you need. Note that Jimeng and Doubao, where Seedance 2.5 is available, are services for China, and whether they can be used from Japan varies by service. Whether the 4K version will be widely released, or become available from Japan, remains to be seen in future announcements.
